What’s Included in a Physician-Supervised Weight Loss Program?
A physician-supervised weight loss program involves putting a patient needing to lose weight on a regimen guided by a physician who is an expert in weight loss and management. The regimen may include guidance and instructions on making healthy lifestyle changes, recommending beneficial supplements, an exercise program, and medications to help lose weight.
Physician-supervised weight loss programs are customized to meet each patient’s specific needs and circumstances and often include making changes every so often to ensure the weight loss program continues to be effective. Most importantly, these programs require regular check-ins with the doctor to talk about progress and struggles. You will be expected to stick to your program as best as possible and will get the encouragement, support, and tools you need to succeed in your program.
Weight Loss Medications
One of the most effective tools doctors use to help patients needing to lose weight is weight loss medications. Our providers may prescribe one or more of the following medications, depending on your needs:
Phentermine, an appetite suppressant, is the most popular weight loss pill in the United States. There are several brand names for phentermine, including Adipex-P® and Lomaira®. In clinical studies, it has been shown to promote weight loss when used for a short time (up to 12 weeks).
Topamax (topiramate) has been used as a treatment for epilepsy and migraines for years, but it is also used off-label in combination with phentermine for weight loss. Many people who take Topamax experience appetite reduction or suppression as a side effect. Patients who take Topamax with phentermine are often able to lose weight faster.
Contrave is a prescription weight loss medication that may help adults who are overweight or obese lose weight and keep it off. It is believed to affect two areas of the brain to reduce hunger and help control cravings.
Belviq (lorcaserin) is a prescription weight loss medication that affects chemical signals in the brain that control appetite. It works by helping you feel full with smaller meals.
Saxenda (liraglutide) is an injectable prescription medicine that may help some obese or overweight adults who also have weight-related medical problems (e.g., high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or type 2 diabetes) to lose weight and keep it off. It is similar to a hormone that occurs naturally in the body and helps control blood sugar, insulin levels, and digestion.
It’s important to note that although Saxenda has the same active ingredient as Victoza®, an injectable medication for treating type 2 diabetes, Saxenda should never be used to treat diabetes and should not be used with insulin or any other diabetes medications.
GLP-1 targets areas of the brain that help regulate appetite, especially after eating. It also slows how quickly the stomach empties, which makes you feel fuller for longer. In addition to this, Wegovy enhances the production of insulin.
As with any medication, there are potential side effects that our trained medical providers will discuss with you, but we sometimes forget that obesity may result in even worse side effects (high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, sleep apnea, etc.).
In most cases, the benefit of using these medications is greater than the risks. We will be sure to provide you with detailed information during your visit and address all your concerns. Each of these medications should be used in conjunction with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.
At Alliance Weight Loss Center, we believe in a step approach to medical weight loss. We only start you with as few medicines as possible at one time. We focus heavily on incorporating lifestyle changes, such as making nutrition changes and teaching you to be physically active. The bottom line is to lose weight and not reach a plateau as you have before.
Information About Your Follow-up Visits
